PROJECT «SILA»

Russia. Protvino
2024

The creation of a fundamentally new, promising «SILA» source, surpassing the technical specifications of existing and planned international synchrotron radiation sources, combining the capabilities of a synchrotron radiation source and a free-electron laser, is aimed at conducting research by Russian scientists that is ahead of the global level, acquiring fundamentally new knowledge at the forefront of science in materials science, chemistry, biomedicine, as well as creating breakthrough technologies that will form a fundamentally new basis for the Russian economy.

The fundamentally new, promising «SILA» source will have characteristics matching the world’s leading synchrotrons (perimeter over 1000 m, electron energy of 6 GeV), while also featuring a unique magnetic structure and a free-electron X-ray laser, together providing access to atomic-level visualization and record time resolutions. The results of creating this fundamentally new, promising «SILA» source are expected to include:

  • formation of the key and flagship element of the national research infrastructure network «megascience» in the Russian Federation;
  • provision of experimental opportunities for conducting synchrotron research by Russian scientific teams on priority areas of scientific and technological development in Russia at a 4th-generation synchrotron radiation source, qualitatively surpassing current standards in the field of «megascience»;
  • strengthening the leading position of the Russian Federation on the global synchrotron research landscape for several decades, ensuring the possibility of creating breakthrough technologies that will form a fundamentally new basis for the Russian economy.
